Lion's Tale News On Student Council

by co-Presidents Eitan Freedenberg and Ian Solomon

Greetings to all from Ian and Eitan! The past few months have been very exciting for Student Council. The continuing success of FlushNotes is thrilling, and we are happy that we have captured the attention of such an avid readership.

November’s ‘8:30 Club’ Dance made an incredible amount of profit, which, based on the students’ votes, was donated to Bob Levey’s Children’s Hospital Campaign.

JDS was also involved in a crucial effort to help rebuild the Chabad Hebrew Academy of San Diego after the devastating fires of last autumn. During November and December, JDS helped by collecting school supplies to send to California.

Several boxes in our front office were overflowing with paper, pens, binders and other much-needed supplies. We will be sending the boxes to California soon.

For Martin Luther King Day, the Student Council undertook a project which we will be continuing through Passover Break. On that day, we spoke about the reality of modern-day slavery. Around the world, there are 27 million slaves. In the Hagadah, it states that in every generation we must see ourselves as having come out of slavery in Egpyt, and with that in mind, the Student Council would like the entire school community to help eradicate slavery worldwide. Until Passover, the holiday celebrating our freedom from bondage, the Student Council will be organizing tzedakah programs for the Free The Slaves Campaign, as well as letter-writing campaigns and education programs.

Our focus recently has been on community service projects, but don’t worry—there will be social events coming up very soon, including a Purim costume contest and a roller rink night. Plus, the Student Council is working to improve the Trip Day structure to include grade-wide voting for the Trip Day adventures. This year, we hope Trip Day will be less like a PBS documentary and more like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book.
