Assistant Coach gives leadership, experience
by Justin Schecker

Boys middle school basketball Head Coach Michael Remington has selected a former player, freshman Ryan Eskow, to be the Student Assistant Coach this season.

Remington made the decision based on Eskow’s experience and knowledge of the game, as well as his seriousness about coaching.

“He always sat beside me on the bench learning things and how I coach,” Remington said.

Remington recognized that Eskow is playing a key role in teaching the new players the plays.

Seventh-grade guard Sam Krosnick agreed that Eskow has had a big role in practices.

“Ryan has taken the starters out and helped them in practice so Remington can help the seventh-graders a little more,” Krosnick said.

Although helpful, Eskow’s addition has been an awkward transition for some players. Eighth-grade forward Eitan Chemerinski, a former teammate of Eskow’s and one of three returning players from last season, has taken a while to adjust to having Eskow as a coach.

“It’s a little awkward to consider him my coach,” said Chemerinski. “He’s not even a year older and I played with him last year. But I still give him respect because he’s a coach.”

Eighth-grade forward Adam Aseraph, another returning player, considered it “weird” at first having Eskow as a student Assistant Coach, but agreed with Remington’s decision.

“He likes to motivate us to play tough and cheers us on in games,” Aseraph said.
Overall, Eskow feels Remington has trusted him and is “pleased” with him as a student Assistant Coach.

The Lions opened their season against its conference rival, the Hebrew Academy Cougars, defeating them 46-34 and followed with a win against the Sandy Spring Wildebeests 46-11.

The team suffered its first loss in its third game, against the Queen Anne Lions, 47-29. The Lions current record is 4-7.
