Student websites censored Hoping to see the results of the latest web-poll or to read the most recent posts, a student opens his web browser and enters the address www.sqpnet.com to load the site of the same name. Eagerly awaiting the website’s fresh contents, the student is instead met by a terse message: “SQPnet is closed. For more information, e-mail the webmaster at...”
This is symptomatic of a greater issue affecting the students, faculty and administration: the proliferation of student created, school-oriented web pages and the administration’s role in monitoring their content.
Over the past year, the administration has forced three such web pages to close, including SQPnet, and although the other two sites have since re-opened, only one has done so with the administration’s consent.
Student Council to restructure To promote efficiency and better communication within the Student Council and with the student body at large, as well as to provide middle school students with more leadership opportunities, the Student Council is discussing restructuring itself for next year.
Director of the Middle School Joan Vander Walde would like the Student Council to split into separate middle school and high school councils with the hopes that this will provide the middle school students with essential leadership opportunities.
Search goes on despite withdrawals
After a second year of seeking out a candidate to be the Head of School, the Search Committee announced that the position will continue to be vacant for the 2001-2 academic year, according to a letter to the JDS community dated March 23.
The Search Committee had undergone discussions with two candidates this year, both of whom ultimately withdrew from consideration for the position, according to the letter.
The 16 member Search Committee, together with Isaacson Miller, the search firm that the committee has been working with since the beginning of this school year, had developed a list of six candidates for the position and had then selected the two candidates that would be ideal for the position, the letter stated.
To laugh or not to laugh: the ‘Series 7’ question; Series 7 poignantly satirizes reality shows, public’s voyeurism
A few years ago, The Blair Witch Project terrified audiences and grossed millions of dollars with a blend of terrifying imagination and reality, in which the line between the two is blurred.
Although Series 7: The Contender has yet to show itself a financial success, it works on much the same level as The Blair Witch Project does, feeding off of the growing obsession with reality- based television shows like Survivor and The Real World and asking the question: how far can and will the line between entertainment and reality be pushed?
Cohn establishes herself at Brandeis; Alumni brings experience to college basketball team
Stepping out onto the basketball court during the first day of basketball tryouts as a freshman at Brandeis University, Rachel Cohn (’98) knew that she would have a tough road ahead of her if she wanted to be successful at the collegiate level; however, her basketball experience at JDS prepared her well.
While Cohn was involved in soccer and softball at JDS, it was evident that she excelled in basketball.
During her high school career she was given all-PVAC honorable mentions as a sophomore and junior and was named second team all-PVAC her senior year. Cohn was also named female athlete of her class upon graduating.
