Varsity cross-country team improves after a tough start

The varsity cross-country team achieved its goals of improvement and unification after the loss of many key runners. Despite the hardships, the girls placed third, while the boys placed fourth.

Last year, the girls varsity cross-country team placed first in the PVAC. However, without the help of Rachel Brandenburg, a team leader who graduated last year, and with the loss of freshman Ariela Cohen and junior Tammy Schulman to injuries, it was hard for the Lions to repeat last season’s success. According to Head Coach Victor Littman, these athletes, especially Brandenburg, were leaders for the rest of the team.

GMS loses in semifinals

Despite falling short of the championship with a loss to the Washington International School Red Devils, the girls middle school soccer team was very proud of its accomplishments and of its improvement throughout the season.

After losing in the quarterfinals last year, the Lions’ main goal this year was to reach the semifinals.

BMS upset by WIS in quarterfinal shootout, 3-1

The boys middle school soccer team ended its season early, suffering a loss to the sixth seeded Washington International School Red Devils in the PVAC quarterfinals on Oct. 26.

This year proved to be another successful regular season for the Lions as they placed among the top four teams in the PVAC for the fourth straight year.

The Lions owed much of their regular season success to their defense, which was led by eighth grade goalkeeper Jesse Tomares and eighth grade sweeper Ari Kobren.

Young BVS team lacks leadership, experience

The boys varsity soccer team, composed primarily of underclassmen, concluded its season on Oct. 30, with a loss to the St. Anslems Panthers in the second round of the playoffs.

The 19 member team consisted of nine freshmen, seven sophomores, one junior and two seniors, one of whom was Yossi May, who injured himself during preseason play and was unable to compete for the majority of the season.

Devils defeat GVS in quarterfinals ;Lions go 7-5-1, finish fourth in league

After a much-improved regular season, the Lions lost to the Washington International School Red Devils in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

While last season the Lions were 2-11 and the seventh seed in the conference, this season they finished the regular season with a record of 7-4-1 and were the fourth seed in the PVAC, which marks their tremendous improvement.

GVV loses to Hebrew Academy in quarterfinals

After a slow start, the girls varsity volleyball team finished the regular season in fifth place with a 7-6 record, only to lose to the Hebrew Academy Cougars in the quarterfinals on Oct. 30.

It appeared that the Lions season was headed downhill after they lost their first three league games, culminating with a loss against the Barrie Day School Mustangs on Sept. 25.

“That was a really tough loss. We did not play as well as we are capable of playing,” said Coach Christian Citarella.
